Haze Impressions

Earlier this month, while attending Ubisoft's inaugural "Ubidays" event in San Francisco, we had an opportunity to check out a playable version of Haze for the first time. Currently in development at UK-based Free Radical Design, Haze is a first-person shooter set over the course of three days in the year 2048, by which time most of the world's governments have outsourced their military operations to major corporations. A group of rebels calling itself "The Promise Hand" is causing trouble somewhere in South America. As a sergeant employed by Mantel Global Industries, your mission--as far as we can tell--is to locate and eliminate the rebels. We weren't allowed to take the controls ourselves on this occasion, but there were plenty of Free Radicals on hand to talk us through both solo and multiplayer demonstrations.

The first stage of the demo took place in a lush jungle environment where camouflaged enemies were almost impossible to pick out amongst the foliage. Fortunately, because you're working for MGI, you're outfitted with all of the company's very best high-tech weapons, gadgets, vehicles, and biomedical support. That last of these comes in the form of a performance-enhancing substance known as Nectar that can be administered to your body with the push of a button. Nectar not only makes you faster and more resistant to damage, but it also adds a number of special abilities to your arsenal. Perception makes enemies easier to spot by highlighting them in orange; focus offers a little aiming assistance to make it easier to kill enemies with headshots; foresight warns you of imminent dangers via a series of visible ripples on the screen that emanate from the enemy or projectile that's threatening you; and melee blast is a powerful melee attack. Like most substances that can't be purchased over the counter, Nectar comes with its fair share of side effects. The Free Radicals showing Haze to us hinted on more than one occasion that those side effects will feature quite prominently in the storyline. Details of Haze's story are, of course, being kept under wraps, but we're told that it'll have a quite sinister edge to it and that one of the subjects you'll be encouraged to think about as you play is the way that other games portray war. We've got one or two theories of our own on how Free Radical Design will achieve that goal, and after hearing about the content of the demos that we saw, you probably will too.

As you play through the three days during in which Haze is set, you'll move seamlessly--that meansno load screens--among a dozen different environments. These environments are known to include a jungle, a quarry, an observatory, a holiday resort, and a disused container ship. The first part of our demo took place in the jungle, which was the perfect locale to show off the aforementioned perception ability. As the Nectar was administered, we noticed that at least two components of the heads-up display superimposed on the screen-filling helmet visor are devoted to the substance. One indicator shows how many doses you have left, while another indictor shows the level of Nectar in your bloodstream. Other elements on the HUD included a health bar and a compass. The level of Nectar in your bloodstream is important because if you use too much, you'll overdose, which causes the screen to blur and enemies or allies to become indistinguishable. You'll also lose control of your trigger, which will automatically open fire on anyone who comes into view. Regardless of whether or not they're being controlled by the CPU or by up to three other players in a co-op game, your squadmates will be vulnerable to the harmful effects of Nectar in the same way as you, and we're told that as you progress through the game, you'll inevitably end up getting addicted.

Our second demo took place in the quarry locale and saw four Free Radicals teaming up in a co-op game. The choke points where gunfights took place were quite far apart, and to travel between them, the squad was using a black "Marine Buggy" that was somewhat reminiscent of the Warthog vehicle in the Halo series. In addition to the driver, the Marine Buggy had room for a soldier to ride shotgun on each side of the driver, as well as someone manning a rear-mounted turret. The driving sequences saw the squad coming under heavy fire, so the Free Radical that we sat with made a point of administering Nectar at one point and putting the foresight ability to good use. Every missile that hit the road was preempted by the aforementioned ripple effect emanating from what would become its point of impact, making it much easier to steer clear of them because there was very little warning otherwise. Proximity mines that lined certain portions of the dirt road gave off the same warning ripples when the demo player was using Nectar, and we suspect that the level would be almost impossible to complete without the drug. Even with the Nectar, we had plenty of opportunities to see the Marine Buggy taking damage, and by the end of the demo, it was a smoking, dented mess.

The third and final level that we were afforded a brief glimpse of during our demo was taken from later in the game. It tasked the MGI squad with locating and eliminating a rebel chief in an industrial setting. The whole environment's appearance was almost devoid of color, and perhaps as a result of excessive Nectar use in previous locales, the action had a much grittier feel to it. This was largely down to the enemies, who screamed and writhed around on the ground in agony after being shot, which was in stark contrast to the quiet deaths that we'd seen earlier. Perhaps it's only toward the end of the game that you'll get to see the combat in Haze for what it really is because you won't be in a "haze" anymore.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about our Haze demo, given the game's futuristic setting and the fact that you're supposed to be equipped with the very best that MGI has to offer, was the distinct lack of a shiny, future arsenal. We asked a couple of the Free Radicals about it and were told that Haze won't feature a huge arsenal of different weapons, but you'll learn to use weapons differently as you progress. We're also told that you'll be limited to carrying just two firearms and two types of grenade at any time. When asking about some of the specifics pertaining to Nectar, we also learned that the Nectar in your body will replenish slightly every time you kill an enemy, making it possible to prolong the drug's positive effects by going on a killing spree. We look forward to bringing you more information on Haze as soon as it becomes available.

Assassin's Creed Pre-E3 Update

At Ubisoft's recent "Ubidays" press event in San Francisco, the company showed off in-the-flesh, often playable versions of its hottest fall releases, like Tom Clancy's EndWar, Haze, and Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway. But Ubisoft's most highly awaited game, Assassin's Creed, was nowhere to be seen on the event floor. The company instead sated attended press with a brief presentation by producer Jade Raymond and a scant few seconds of new gameplay footage. Honestly, we couldn't glean much in the way of hard details from the trailer, but of course we're going to report on any new public exhibition of such a sought-after game, however slight. Besides, we'll cut Ubisoft a little slack on this one, since the company is promising a public hands-on demo of the game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in just about six weeks.

First of all, the new trailer doesn't even touch on the science fiction tie-in at the end of last year's E3 demo. Raymond says fans will have to wait until even after this year's E3 to find out anything more about the game's potentially time-traveling or otherwise futuristically influenced plot twist (though we're betting we won't find out what's really going on until we play through the game for ourselves). We do get to see more new cities from the Crusades (set roughly from 1100 to 1300), such as Jerusalem and Damascus, as well as an area Raymond somewhat cryptically referred to as "the Kingdom." These areas are roughly 15 times larger than what we saw at last year's E3. Moreover, the engine now supports 150 discrete computer-controlled characters, each with independent AI, so it sounds like the team is working hard on filling out those medieval expanses for the final game.

The trailer doesn't show off a lot in terms of new gameplay, but it does seem to place an emphasis on equestrian combat. We were pretty into the retractable blades that you'll be able to hide underneath your sleeves (which can be seen in the trailer), but then, we like to look at the game's hero Altaïr as some sort of medieval ninja. The last gameplay element we got any info on was the leap of faith, a move that will facilitate your quick exit from the scene of your nefarious doings. Raymond says missions in the game won't end when you perform the kill; escaping from the area will be as important as taking down your mark. You'll be able to make a leap of faith from predefined high points (indicated by specific imagery, like a flock of birds) onto soft spots like bales of hay below. The team wants to offer exciting chase sequences in the final game, and this move sounds like an important part of those mechanics.

Ubisoft is promising a lot more on the game at E3, so we'll bring you more (including hands-on information) in July. And make sure you view the new trailer, linked at the top of this preview, to tide you over.

Alien Shorter: Vengeance

Painfully generic name notwithstanding, Alien Shooter: Vengeance is no Brand X game. That title is both blah and misleading, as this Sigma Team effort is actually a gung-ho retro take on the action-packed isometric shooter genre that had a brief moment in the sun about a decade ago, not the second-rate FPS that the box cover implies. The game may be a little too self-consciously old-school for some, but the action is so fast, furious, and blithely bloody that it's hard to resist getting swept up in the carnage.

You're surrounded all the time in survival mode.

Old-timers will quickly note that Alien Shooter: Vengeance resembles the two Crusader games, No Regret and No Remorse, that shot up DOS PCs way back in 1995 and 1996. For those of you who haven't got enough gray in your beard to remember that duo, the simple concept behind those games saw the viewing perspective of a standard kill-everything-that-moves FPS switched to an isometric, third-person camera. Sigma closely follows that template here, keeping the focus on the action but also adding some interesting, light squad tactics along with character creation and RPG elements similar to those seen in the likes of X-COM and Jagged Alliance.

The story itself is pretty bare-bones. It's the postapocalyptic future, you're working as a mercenary for the MAGMA Energy Corporation (described as "the leader of many things energetical," whatever that means), and a lot of ugly aliens need to be blown away. Chances are you've heard this sort of thing a few times before. This skeletal framework is sufficient to support a game where you do little more than smear ET blood all over the walls, and Sigma has done great work with the RPG aspects of the game. Rolling up initial characters is spiced up with the ability to pick a special perk. These options are fairly limited, encompassing just eight different choices, but they include some nifty ideas modeled after what you could give your character in the Fallout games and are given similarly humorous descriptions. For instance, you can be a vampire, with the ability to suck health out of enemies, or a hypnotist, who gets to take over the minds of baddies. Beyond this, though, the RPG personality of the game is limited. After picking a perk, you choose from between eight premade characters, although at least during gameplay you level up and can apply experience points to buff typical shooter skills like the ability to use pistols, shotguns, and machine guns.

Not that any wimpy RPG stuff is necessary. Frenetically blasting aliens is Alien Shooter's sole reason for existence, so in this respect the title is dead-on. The game's personality is a cross between Robotron, DOOM, and Serious Sam. Pretty much every mission is a corridor crawl to find some item, rescue a few trapped buddies, or simply kill a big bad. You regularly get trapped in rooms and swarmed by thousands of bugs (literally--the game tracks your kills and they seem to go into four digits each and every level). Many areas are dimly lit or pitch-black, so you have to move forward carefully using the narrow beam of a flashlight to pick up any aliens scuttling your way. And the carnage is typically so intense that by the time you've finished with a room, you'll have painted every last inch of the floors and walls with alien blood and gore. It ain't pretty, but it sure gets the adrenaline flowing.

Aside from the killing, though, there isn't much here. The nonstop blasting gets a bit numbing after a little while, so the game is best taken in short doses. There are lots of secret areas to discover, but little to find in them aside from power-ups, weapons, and ammo, and these items are so prevalent in the main sections of levels that you don't need to do any wandering to pick up more of them. Most of the exploring is pretty simplistic, too. Generally, if you see something green, you should run up to it, as it's likely a power-up or a button activating a secret door. If you see something red, that means no-go, or that you need to find a key to open that particular door. You can jazz things up by skipping the campaign for survival mode, which comes in a last-man-standing variant where you blast bugs until you drop, and a career option spread over five levels. Neither option changes the complexion of gameplay, of course. The same can presumably be said about multiplayer, although this couldn't be tested as it only supports LAN and direct IP connections.

Finish up a wave of aliens and it'll usually look like you've just painted the walls a none-too-appetizing bright red.

The look and sound of the game are totally retro. While there are supposed to be more than 50 types of alien to shoot, most look like typical variations on praying mantises, slugs, and a couple that seem sort of like dinosaurs. Movement and animations are clumsy, although this ultimately helps reinforce the game's throwback flavor. Explosions are just fantastic, however, and colored lighting gives many levels a suitably eerie air. Audio is limited. When the lights go out or the doors close and you get gooned by a phalanx of bugs, you get the stereotypical driving heavy metal tunes that have accompanied shooter shooting since the early '90s. Other than that, though, the dialogue is as sparse and as roughly delivered as you'd find in an old Sega Genesis cart. Again, this seems entirely intentional, so you'll get a kick out of the sound if you remember playing games like this back in the day.

You probably need to have the nostalgia gene to really get into Alien Shooter: Vengeance, but you don't have to be an old fogey to get some base-level enjoyment out of this gleeful shoot-'em-up. Look past the dumb name and give it a shot.
